Remembering my grandfather today who fought in the Philippines with the USAFFE, the United States Armed Forces of the Far East

Remembering my grandfather today who fought in the Philippines with the USAFFE, the United States Armed Forces of the Far East. He survived and escaped from the the Death March after watching many of his friends lose their lives. They were starving in the jungle. One of his friends was injured and falling behind. But he couldn't keep holding him up because you weren't allowed to stop or turn around. I'll never forget the pained look on his face when he talked about it. He somehow paid a woman in a small boat to hold her baby and pretend to be the father. I don't know how he managed it, because we never heard the details. I only heard him talk about the war two times: Once, when I was writing a biography about him in middle school and I was interviewing him. And a second time, when I was in high school doing a book report on a thick book about World War II. I would see him pick it up and read portions of it. He would point out the inaccuracies. Besides, the historians that wrote it weren't there. Knowing his story helps me understand other people. Because you never know what someone's been through. Plus, it's an inspiration to witness the amazing resilience of the human spirit.
